For Immediate Release: September 22, 2008
Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York, Tel. 1-917-699-9935
NEW YORK—The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) joined the Pan Thracian Union of America “ORPHEUS” for a three hour boat cruise around Manhattan, setting sail from Pier 83 on Manhattan’s West Side. Warm weather and beautiful sunny skies, made for a pleasant Sunday afternoon get together for the activists from both societies who travelled from various boroughs of New York City, and nearby New Jersey to reflect on the past year’s success. Attendees included Theo Kekkis from the Boston-based Pontian society “PONTIAKI ESTIA OF MASSACHUSSETTS” who travelled to New York that weekend to participate, and Mr. Dionysios Pilarinos , the 1st Assistant Secretary of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York. The cruise was the first joint social event organized following the July 20th Anniversary events marking the Turkish invasion of Cyprus , and the earlier Pontian Genocide memorials for May 19th Remembrance earlier in the year. Nikolaos Taneris of CANA, and Ioannis Fidanakis ,the President of Pan Thracian Union of America “ORPHEUS” are jointly working together to educate the community and help to build solidarity on current issues related to human rights.
“It’s always a wonderful opportunity to get together again with our dedicated activists and plan for the coming year, this cruise was our way of saying thank you to all the grass-roots, the heart and soul of our movement,” commented Taneris.
The diversity of age, gender and backgrounds in this boat cruise reflects CANA’s firm commitment to working in coalition with all people who believe in our struggle for human rights. In coming months, the CANA and the Pan Thracians will be building the momentum to tackle such difficult community issues as Macedonia, False Historical Revisionism, activism on forced displacement in Cyprus, and the Thracian and Pontian Genocide.
