Cypriots Protest At The Turkish Embassy Washington DC To Mark 34th Anniversary of Turkish Invasion

For Immediate Release: July 21, 2008

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York, Tel. 1-917-699-9935

CBS NEWS COVERS 34th ANNIVERSARY OF TURKISH INVASION THANKS TO CANA ACTION!

WASHINGTON DC—The crowd of diverse Cypriot demonstrators braved the scorching sun outside the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC, and long distances, travelling from as far away as Seattle, Annapolis, Philadelphia and New York to mark the 34th Anniversary of Turkey’s criminal military-invasion and ongoing illegal military-occupation of Cyprus and to protest Turkey’s continued denial of that crime against humanity.

“Turkey's efforts to deny the invasion of Cyprus, coupled with its systematic destruction of cultural and religious monuments, the renaming of cities and other geographic landmarks and its methodical program of illegal Turkish settlers make the current Turkish government an accomplice to and culpable for Crimes Against Humanity in Cyprus," stated Nikolaos Taneris, who heads the Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA). “We reiterated our message to the Turkish regime and its collaborators that we will not go away and we will not be silent until Turkey admits the invasion, returns occupied Cypriot lands and makes appropriate reparations,” he continued.

A bus load of Cyprus supporters from the STATHAKION CENTER of the FEDERATION of HELLENIC SOCIETIES of GREATER NEW YORK in Astoria, were joined by dozens of others who came to Embassy Row in the downtown area of Washington DC for the demonstration.  Representatives from the Hellenic societies of the Lakonians, the Athenians, the Pan Thracian Union of America “ORPHEUS” and, most notably, support from the Brotherhood of MANI, helped make this demonstration such a great success. Demonstrators distributed flyers while, loudly and proudly, chanting slogans such as “Turkish Troops Out of Cyprus” and “Turkish Murderers Out of Cyprus.”

This year, the Turkish Embassy organized numerous Turks, many of whom were seen coming in and out of the Turkish Embassy, to provoke and heckle the demonstrators.  These actions call into question grave ethical and legal questions about a foreign embassy (that is, Turkey’s Embassy) directly supporting and organizing “so-called” political demonstrators on American soil.  The Turkish Embassy directly interacted with their Turk “so-called” political demonstrators , some of whom flashed the Grey Wolf  (this is the Turkish version of the Ku Klux Klan)hand signal.  The Turks, with numerous portraits of “Ataturk” and flags representing the illegal pseudo-state of Occupied-Cyprus,  were in front of their Turkish Embassy many hours before the official  CANA protest was set to begin, and were seen giving directions to their Turk “so-called” demonstrators and to their lawyer through the gates and doors of the Turkish Embassy. All the Turkish signs in the beginning looked like they were printed out by computer, with denialist propaganda slogans, and lame outdated quotes from the 1960s about Cyprus, that they most likely copied quickly off of a random Turkish website.  At one point, some Turks went into the Turkish Embassy empty-handed and came out moments later carrying hand written signs scrawled with the slogans  'Greek Troops Occupy Macedonia' and 'Istanbul since 1453'.  Many of the Turk so-called demonstrators were sighted driving around with Turkish diplomatic license plates.  Some of the Turks drove up and down Embassy Row honking their horns and waving Turk flags, until they were pulled over by the police. It is noteworthy to mention that Yenal Kucuker, the Turkish born intern of U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield (KY-01), co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Turkey, was one of the Turkish Embassy’s so-called demonstrators.   Gunay Evinch President Elect of ATAA (Assembly of Turkish American Associations) and "the lawyer of the Turkish Embassy” led the Turks who provoked our demonstrators.  Gunay Evinch acted as their spokesperson, he spent his whole day on July 20th 2008, standing in front of the Turkish Embassy, trying to provoke our demonstrators.  Hear and see Gunay Evinch in our CANA grassroots You Tube video.  Gunay Evinch (wearing a white t-shirt and white shorts), standing in front of the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC on July 20, 2008, singing "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."  GUNAY EVINCH PRESIDENT ELECT OF ATAA ASSEMBLY OF TURKISH AMERICAN ASSOCIATIONS is now on You Tube, for all to view, please distribute widely.  This is “the brains” of the Turkish lobby and “the lawyer of the Turkish Embassy”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35YupEDq1Nw

The demonstration was aired on the CBS affiliate (WUSA9), in the July 20th evening broadcast.  CANA now has earned remarkable success for the Cyprus cause.  The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) through bold and assertive public advocacy, managed to achieve American network television coverage to mark July 20th 2008 as “the 34th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus”

In addition to the CBS coverage, CANA supporter, Kathryn Cameron Porter, President of the Leadership Council for Human Rights, joined our demonstration in Washington and published a  commentary entitled “Cyprus solution , please” in The Washington Times  on July 20th 2008, which she asked to be read aloud at the CANA protest::

http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jul/20/cyprus-solution-please/

Senator Leonidas P. Raptakis of Rhode Island also sent a letter to The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA), to be read into the record at our demonstration to mark the 34th Anniversary Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the letter can be read in pdf format in this link:

http://cyprusactionnetwork.org/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/Cyprus1.202195930.pdf

Washington DC Greek press correspondent Lambros Papantoniou wrote a Hellenic language report on our demonstration, for large circulation Hellenic daily Eleftheros Typos, available in this link:

http://cyprusactionnetwork.org/report_in_hellenic_on_hands_off_cyprus_2008_protest

On July 20th of each year Cypriots worldwide commemorate Turkey's criminal military-invasion of Cyprus. July 20, 1974, was the date when the Turkish government with use of napalm, bombs and warplanes began a campaign of rapes, terror and murder that resulted in the illegal military-occupation of well over one-third of Cypriot land, The Cypriot community holds a picket in front of the Turkish Embassy in London every year, and an all night vigil is also held in Syndagma Square in Athens, in addition to demonstrations and memorials in Cyprus and around the world. This July 20, 2008 marks the second time in history that Cypriots demonstrated directly in front of the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC. The Turkish State continues to deny responsibility for Crimes Against Humanity in Cyprus and finances endowed chairs of Turkish Studies at various American universities, and spends millions of dollars each year  on lobbies in America, to deny Turkish crimes in Cyprus.

Despite such pressure, grass-roots activism spearheaded by this Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) demonstration in front of the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC has managed on July 20th 2008 in marking the 34th Anniversary of the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus,   to send the message out to millions of Americans and to the entire Turkish State that we will not be silent and we will not go away, until Turkey admits to the invasion, returns occupied Cypriot lands and makes appropriate reparations,

Several videos of the CANA demonstration marking the 34th Anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus have been uploaded to the CANA Grassroots channel on YouTube, available in this link:  http://www.youtube.com/CANAgrassroots

CANA TO PICKET CYPRUS INVASION DENIERS, TURKISH COALITION OF AMERICA AND CONGRESSMAN WEXLER
For Immediate Release: July 3, 2008

WHERE: Dacor Bacon House, 1801 F St NW, Washington DC
WHEN: Monday, July 14th, 2008 7PM-9PM

WASHINGTON DC—The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) will be picketing outside the Turkish Coalition of America sponsored event celebrating Cyprus invasion denier Congressman Robert Wexler in the DACOR BACON HOUSE in Washington DC, on the evening of Monday, July 14th at 7PM.

Turkey’s international industry of denial is financed to the tune of millions of dollars, vomited up from the stolen lands and thefts of our people, then poured into the coffers of Turkish lobbies such as Turkish Coalition of America, which recently announced the establishment of the “Turkish Anti-Defamation League”, that mirrors the paranoia of Ankara’s racist anti-Cypriot conspiracies. Its highlights include a call to import Turkey’s Cyprus invasion denial into this country with an emphasis on the alleged “political power of Armenians, Greeks, Greek Cypriots, or otherwise.”

Congressman Robert Wexler will be discussing and signing his new book, FIRE-BREATHING LIBERAL, according to the Turkish Coalition invitation, “Wexler's book focuses on his leading role in US foreign policy and highlights his efforts to strengthen America's partnership with NATO ally Turkey…Since being elected in 1996, Wexler has led several high-level Congressional delegation trips to Turkey meeting with leading Turkish political leaders to promote close US-Turkish relations including former Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, former President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, President Abdullah Gul, military leaders in the Turkish General Staff as well as leading Turkish business organizations and Think Tanks.”

Former TMT Turkish terrorist leader, Denktash (who ruled the forces that murdered Cypriot demonstrators ISSAK AND SOLOMOU) was one of the Turkish political leaders Wexler met with while visiting illegally Occupied-Cyprus.
The Turkish Congressional Caucus was founded by Wexler, and in the past few months, has ballooned to around eighty members, thanks largely to Wexler.

Wexler’s record is abysmal. His staffer flew illegally into the Tymbou airport in Occupied Cyprus in August of 2005 with a Turkish sponsored congressional trip which included pro-Turkish congressman Edward Whitfield (R-KY). The trip ignored international law because the legal entry points of Cyprus are through Nicosia, Paphos, Larnaca, or Limassol.

In a statement prominently displayed on the website of the “Turkish Coalition of America”, Congressman Robert Wexler makes public his plans to legitimize Turkey’s ongoing, illegal military-occupation of Cyprus: “We need to, in a very dramatic way, increase America’s Turkish Cypriot relations. We should have direct flights, have more economic development, push more recognition of Turkish Cypriot interests in world affairs,” says Wexler.

In regards to Turkish atrocities in Cyprus, condemned by numerous UN resolutions, and in violation of all human rights conventions, Congressman Wexler has advanced false historical revisionism to absolve Turkey of any responsibility for its crimes in Cyprus, following one of Wexler’s visits to the illegal pseudo-regime in Turkish-occupied Cyprus, Wexler said “Unfortunately, most people of the U.S. don’t know anything about Cyprus Those that do will often understand it to be a Turkish attack, and not a response to a historical effort to unify Cyprus with Greece. “ (“The New Anatolian” Turkey’s only independent English- language daily, Monday April, 10th 2006)

Wexler never made a clear statement calling for troop reduction in Cyprus, he wrote a letter last year, that like Turkey, vaguely calls for a solution, or basically, he repeated Turkey’s Cyprus invasion denial party line, he wrote "“Troop deployment on Cyprus seems to be disproportional – given the low threat level facing Turkish-Cypriots”, Wexler said, adding that ''thirteen
million crossings of the Green Line have occurred without incident''.

If read carefully that letter basically reinforces Turkish arguments that Turkey has “rights” to be there because of a "threat level facing Turkish Cypriots", he's simply saying the threat level is “low”, but hasn't gone away, basically Wexler reiterates the false historical revisionist "Peace Intervention" argument of Turkey, that argues that Turkish military forces have a “right” to intervene on Cypriot territory because of Turkish claims that Greek Cypriots pose a “danger” or “threat level” to Turkish Cypriots, and is AGAIN Cyprus invasion denying, no surprise, Genocide deniers are also Cyprus invasion deniers.

The criminal Turkish invasion or land grab of Cyprus initiated by the Turkish government on July 20, 1974, was inflicted on innocent Cypriot people by sheer, brute force. Hundreds of thousands of Cypriots remain refugees following Turkey’s systematic campaign of rapes, terror, bombings, burnings and forced displacement. Over one thousand missing Cypriots, reportedly used for barbaric scientific experiments by the Turks, remain unaccounted.

As the days draw near to the memorial date of July 20th, marking the Turkish Crime of illegal invasion in Cyprus, we are making a moral call to picket Cyprus invasion deniers, Cyprus Haters, and Turkish revisionist hate groups, --the time has come to draw public attention to Turkey’s continuing crimes in Cyprus.

Our picket will also function as a teach-in, hundreds of t-shirts with the slogans, SHAME ON WEXLER! SHAME ON TURKEY! CYPRIOTS WANT THEIR LAND BACK! TURKISH TROOPS OUT OF CYPRUS! , will be distributed to passer-bys and pedestrians, along with our educational pamphlet “Turkish Crimes”

It is imperative for Cypriots to demonstrate courage and picket these Cyprus Haters. Please contact the CANA by email cana@cyprusactionnetwork.org for details. Join the CANA and demand action. And be good, dedicated Cypriots with courage. Spread our message and get involved.

With Love of Cyprus, Nikolaos Taneris,

CANA CALLS FOR UNITY ON JULY 20th GRASSROOTS CYPRUS DEMONSTRATION
For Immediate Release:  June 23, 2008

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York, Tel. 1-917-699-9935

NEW YORK--On Sunday, July 20 2008, the Cyprus Action Network of America(CANA)– launches  the grass roots “Hands Off Cyprus 2008”Washington DC demonstration in support of a coordinated national effort to urge Congressional representatives  to bring legislation calling for an end to the Turkish military occupation to a floor vote. Members of all
Hellenic and philhellenic societies and federations, human rights activists and all people of conscience are invited to participate.

The “Hands Off Cyprus 2008” protest campaign  will include the distribution of hundreds of postcards and t-shirts, and life-sized replica posters for distribution to passers-bys, pedestrians and members of
Congress with slogans from the demonstration stating “End Turkish Military Occupation in Cyprus”,  “Cypriots Want Their Land Back”, “End Turkish Fascism” and “Turkish troops out of Cyprus”. Various media correspondents and celebrities will be either covering or attending, including Hellenic Hip hop artist BZ JAM, and popular Turkish
television documentarian, Barbaras Serdar.  Writers, authors and activists familiar with forced displacement are scheduled to present teach-ins and lectures in the coming weeks .At least two local progressive news outlets will be on hand at our demonstration, and we expect coverage from
network affiliates. This year, it is expected that hundreds of activists will attend.

In order to promote awareness of the  continuing human rights crisis in Cyprus, we will need to build the coalitions necessary to tell our story to a wide range of different people, the “Hands Off Cyprus 2008” campaign also aims to broaden our community outreach by actively pursuing the participation of non-Hellenic people who believe in fairness and justice. Diversity is strength, and that is why CANA strives to include the participation of people from diverse ethnic and national origins.

We are proud of the experienced Cyprus supporters who led the efforts to bring justice for Cyprus in the immediate aftermath of the criminal military invasions of Cyprus initiated by the Turkish government on July 20th 1974, and for many years since then, for inspiring so many Hellenic-Americans in America to participate in our political process, many for the first time. This “Hands Off Cyprus 2008” grass-roots demonstration compliments the extraordinary effort of those experienced Cyprus
supporters who introduce legislations and follow up in coordination with a vast grass-roots network of concerned Americans, marked by an annual meeting with key Congressional representatives set close to the date of July 20th. We must strengthen the grassroots campaign, we must make it more diverse, and our demonstration is meant to advance our community’s position with Congress and the White House.

In order to do that, we are going to spend the next days and weeks leading up to the “Hands Off Cyprus 2008” demonstration working toward
one goal: UNITY ON JULY 20th.

Letters to the Editor
The Washington Times
3600 New York Avenue, NE
Washington, DC 20002

To the Editor:

Mehmet Ali Talat, president of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as reported in The Washington Times ("Leader to seek Turkish unity," World, Thursday) "considers the 2004 U.N. proposal for a federal solution as the only viable basis for talks"

The so-called Annan plan, named after former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, explicitly provisioned that tens of thousands of foreign troops commandeered by the Republic of Turkey be given the right to remain on the territory of the sovereign Republic of Cyprus and to intervene over all of Cyprus. Effectively, the nation of Cyprus would be forced to live under the rule of another nation.

In recent weeks, Mr. Talat stated in a public "salute to independent Kosovo" that "no nation may be forced to live under the rule of another nation."

Isn't it time for Mr. Talat to put into practice what he preaches? Mr. Talat, even one foreign soldier of occupation is tens of thousands of times too many. Tear down the wall that divides us, end the only ongoing military occupation in Europe and set our people free.

Leader to seek Turkish unity

March 20, 2008

By Andrew Borowiec - NICOSIA, Cyprus — The newly elected communist president of Cyprus yesterday pledged to pursue talks to unite the Mediterranean island but gave no indication he would accept Turkish conditions that a U.N. formula be used.

Dimitris Christofias will meet tomorrow with Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, in an attempt to break the deadlock between Greek and Turkish Cypriots on the divided island.

Statements issued by both sides indicated no change in their positions.

At the first press conference since his election last month, Mr. Christofias warned that a failure to unify would be "devastating for the future of our people."

"We do not want delays; we do not have the time," he said, but cautioned against acting in haste "without the necessary preparation that will allow progress."

Mr. Talat, president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus that is backed by about 35,000 Turkish troops deployed on the island, said he considers the 2004 U.N. proposal for a federal solution as the only viable basis for talks. The proposal, named for former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, was accepted by the Turkish Cypriots but rejected by the Greek side in a referendum.

Referring to the deadlock, Mr. Christofias said the partnership "has not worked and both communities and foreign interventions are responsible for this."

He urged a withdrawal of the Turkish expeditionary corps. Ankara, which does not recognize the Greek Cypriot government, has rejected such pleas.

While rejecting the Annan plan, Mr. Christofias proposed talks aimed at "the evolution of the unitary bi-communal state of Cyprus into a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal state, with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality."

He said negotiations should be based on previous agreements between the communities as well as on resolutions issued by the United Nations and European Union condemning Turkish military intervention after the 1974 Greek coup to link Cyprus with Greece.

The Cyprus deadlock represents an obstacle in Turkey's application for membership in the European Union and has hampered economic progress of the Turkish Cypriot minority.

Mr. Christofias, who before his election was secretary-general of the Progressive Party of the Working People, said the party's communist affiliation was irrelevant because "what counts in Cyprus is our agony," not political labels.

"My party has acted in a most constructive way," he said. "Let's finish this agony; that's our problem."

SALUTE TO HELLENIC REVOLUTION
For Immediate Release: March 25, 2008

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York, Tel. 1-917-699-9935

NEW YORK--The Press Office of The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) in solidarity with the men and women of The Hellenic League of America (HLA) today salutes the martyrs, heroes and sacrifices of the Hellenic Revolution that is marked on March 25th every year, in memory of the struggle that began on March 17th-March 25th in 1821. Hellas began a struggle to liberate our beleaguered people from slavery. The very existence of the Hellenic Republic is living testament that few can be victorious against many, and that the call for freedom can prevail against tyranny.

After centuries of prejudice, persecution, mass rapes and mass murder perpetrated by the officials and military occupiers of the Ottoman Turkish empire --predecessor to the genocidal Republic of Turkey, -- after many failed Hellenic rebellions for freedom that ended in more massacres and slavery for our people, ultimately, the liberation struggle of 1821, became a Hellenic Revolution, riding our homeland of the foreign oppressors.

On this solemn day we also remember the many who suffer and remain enslaved, our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, our grandparents who were slaughtered ,and forced out of their homes and farmlands in Cyprus  by the criminal Turkish government, one of the most repressive, human-rights-abusing regimes in the world today,

We remember that Cyprus remains enslaved, we remember the young protestors -- Anastasios (Tassos) Isaac and Solomos Solomou, who were murdered before the eyes of the world in 1996 in Dheryneia, by Turkish officials who walk the streets of Turkey, who walk our occupied lands today, and fly their red flag, dripping with the blood of our brutalized people, over our villages, towns, farms and mountains and fields, over our homeland, every single day.

Today, we salute the dreams of those men and women who gave everything, took nothing and never begged for anything.

In memory of the few who joined the Hellenic Revolution at its very beginnings.

Victory or Death!

ESPN RESPONDS TO CANA PROTEST FOR CYPRUS

For Immediate Release: March 18, 2008

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York, Tel. 1-917-699-9935

NEW YORK-This week,  ESPN responded to the Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) letter writing protest of ESPN’s Anti-Cyprus remarks, dated  January 18, 2008, regarding commentary on proud Cypriot tennis star Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis premised almost entirely on false historical revisionism, inaccuracies and omissions.

George Bodenheimer , President of ESPN, was contacted and  then he asked ESPN spokesperson Christine Buchbinder De Calcagno to research and respond, following subsequent inquiries by CANA activist and legal professional Georgia Maratheftis, ESPN duly responded with a statement on Cyprus, and now correctly uses the international legal name for our homeland, the Republic of Cyprus. ESPN also now states that:” The appropriate executives and producers were notified so that steps may be taken to avoid comments of this nature in future broadcasts. “

The ESPN network is available in over 100 million homes in the United States and over 150 countries and territories via ESPN International., CANA corrected ESPN, and CANA proves once again that it is the most persuasive grass-roots organization supporting human rights for the people of Cyprus. Our network of highly-educated and media savvy professionals , all unpaid volunteers, speak out for justice and stand up for the victims and survivors of Crimes against Humanity and Crimes of Genocide.

WE WILL NOT BE IGNORED!

The text of the ESPN statement on Cyprus  appears below, followed by CANA activist  Georgia Maratheftis’ letter,to which the ESPN statement  responds.

(Statement From ESPN spokesperson Christine Buchbinder De Calcagno March 17, 2008)

Dear Georgia,

During ESPN's coverage of the Australian Open match January 17 between Marcos Baghdatis of the Republic of Cyprus and Marat Safin of Russia , an ESPN map of the island and analyst Cliff Drysdale's characterizations of it left open the possibility for misinterpretation by not specifying the island's political situation.

It was not the intent of ESPN or any of its analysts to discuss the territorial declarations of the island's inhabitants. Rather, the intent was to offer some background on Baghdatis and where he lived. The comments by Drysdale, who referred to Baghdatis as hailing from the "Greek part of Cyprus " could be interpreted as political but were meant as communal.

The appropriate executives and producers were notified so that steps may be taken to avoid comments of this nature in future broadcasts.

Sincerely,

Christine Buchbinder De Calcagno

ESPN

(Letter From CANA To George Bodenheimer, President, ESPN, January 18, 2008 )

Dear Mr. Bodenheimer,

I am writing to express my distress at comments made by your commentators in ESPN's coverage of the Australian Tennis Open this morning relating to the Republic of Cyprus and the Cypriot player, Marcos Baghdatis.

During the coverage your commentators referred to a "Greek Cyprus" and a "Turkish Cyprus" and presented a map showing no lines dividing the island.  It is totally inappropriate for a news organization to so demean and diminish the loss of the Cypriot people.

As you and ESPN must surely know, international law and the international community only recognizes the Republic of Cyprus .  It is incorrect and immoral to refer to a "Turkish Cyprus." My mother's mother was killed by Turkey 's occupying forces and my father's parents were held as prisoners.  All of my uncles, aunts and cousins became refugees as a result of Turkey 's forcible occupation.  I strongly abhor any diminution of the suffering caused by the actions of Turkey against the Republic of Cyprus

I would think that news commentators, even sports news commentators, would be well apprised of such matters and that they would have the ability to speak accurately.  This mornings coverage was an insult to the intelligence of ESPN's audience.

Thank you for your time and I would appreciate learning of any action ESPN takes on this matter.  I can be contacted as noted below.

Sincerely,

 Georgia Maratheftis

Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA )

Those of us from second and third generations bring more education and sophistication to the cause than do our traumatized, mostly timid immigrant parents and grandparents.

The time has come  for a new dawn  for Hellenism in the homeland and in the Diaspora.

On a final note, many videos of our appearances, have been uploaded to the internet, at least one reflects the multicultural diversity of New York and its ethnic communities, documenting the many different flags representing dozens of different cultures and countries, interspersed with New York street scenes and speeches by,first,  Jewish-American Holocaust scholar and  JASENOVAC RESEARCH INSTITUTE  (JRI) Founder Barry Lituchy,  followed by Serbian-American community organizer for the STOP coalition (The Stop Terrorizing Orthodox Peoples Coalition) John Bosnitch, and concluding with a rallying call by Hellenic-American Leader, Nikolaos Taneris:  http://youtube.com/watch?v=eooHVDUaops

CANA STANDS WITH ARMENIANS, JEWS AND ROMA AGAINST RACISM AND HOLOCAUST DESECRATION
For Immediate Release: January 31, 2008

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York,  Tel. 1-917-699-9935

NEW YORK—Activists around the world, including world renown composer Diamanda Galas and the London-based Lobby for Cyprus, have alerted us to the recent racist attack by a Turkish hate group targetting Armenians, Jews and Roma on Holocaust Memorial Day,  (27 January)  a national event in the United Kingdom (where the racist attack took place) dedicated to the remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust.

The tiny Armenian Welsh community planned to commemorate the Holocaust of European Jews  and of Roma people, and to remember Hrant Dink, instead the memorial cross where they were to gather was found smashed to pieces, and the commemoration itself was disrupted by racist rants , with aid of a megaphone, during the readings of prayers, and Holocaust survivor Alexander Kimel was heckled by Turkish racists.

Please send messages of support to the Wales Armenia Solidarity
Email: (eilian@nant.wanadoo.co.uk), which will in turn be sent to the Prime Minister of the National Assembly of Wales. Ultimately, they also will ask that the UK government and the Turkish Embassy condemn the racist attack.

Our response, follows below, and is in turn followed by the original Wales-Armenia Solidarity Press Release:

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Please be assured that the Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) stands with you , in solidarity against this assault on all humanity on Holocaust Memorial Day by the Turkish racists who targeted your noble cause of Remembrance.

The lessons of the Holocaust, the Armenian, Assyrian, Greek and Pontic Greek Genocide, the destruction of Smyrna, the extermination of Greeks in Cyprus will fail to have any meaning at all, if we, who sympathise with you, and all of those elected officials and politicians fail to act and condemn this racism, which has been fueled and financed worldwide by the Turkish government.

In the words, of  Holocaust survivor Terrence Des Pres “The will to truth is cowed by pressure of numerous kinds, reasons of state on the one hand, economic necessities on the other, and, not least, the pure careerism of intellectuals who put their expertise in the service of power as a matter of course. When governments and professional elites find reward in the sophistries of might makes right, truth is bound to suffer. “

The UK government, the US government, and all civilized world governments the world over should stand up to the racism which Turkey inspires, funds and spreads like a vile cancer.

We at CANA abhor the diminution of suffering of innocent people. And we stand by you one hundred percent.

Sincerely,

Nikolaos Taneris

Armenian Genocide Monument desecrated on Holocaust Memorial Day

Turkish protesters disrupt Holocaust and Hrant Dink Commemmorations

The tiny Welsh Armenian community were targeted with a despicable racist attack on Holocaust Memorial Day. The new Armenian Genocide Monument(which was erected by the community under the leadership of John Torosyan in november ) was desecrated in the early hours of the morning before important ceremonies were held today to Commemmorate the Holocaust, and  to remember Hrant Dink. The ornate Armenian Cross on the monument was smashed to bits by persons unknown using a hammer, which was left at the scene of the crime.

One of the Welsh Armenians said: "This is our holiest shrine. Our grandparents who perished in the Genocide do not have marked graves. This is where we remember them"

Eilian Williams of Wales Armenia Solidarity said that he blamed the so-called "Committee for the Protection of Turkish Rights"
<britishcptr@aol.com>   under the leadership of Hal Savas (mobile number 07770302822) for the crime. The police took the hammer for fingerprints.

He continued:” I call on Armenians and other sympathisers throughout the world to send messages of support to Wales Armenia Solidarity (eilian@nant.wanadoo.co.uk) which we can send to the Prime Minister of the National Assembly of Wales. We shall repair the cross again and again no matter how often it is desecrated. We also challange the UK government and the Turkish Embassy to condemn this racist attack.

The Holocaust commemmoration was a gesture of friendship by Welsh Armenians towards the Jewish and Roma communities Eminent Welshman Robin Gwyndaf prayed in Welsh and English. The Assembly Member Jenny Randerson called on the UK government to recognize the Armenian genocide

During the Prayers for the Holocaust victims, the said Turkish Committee used a loud-speaker to disrupt proceedings

Finally Martin Shipton, chief reporter for the "Western Mail" the national newspaper of Wales gave his tribute to Hrant Dink (also
representing the National Union of Journalists). The Turkish protesters also disrupted his speech.

This prayer of Holocaust Survivor Alexander Kimel was read (to the sound of Turkish heckling):

 Prayer for the Mothers:
Almighty God, full of Love, remember all the Jewish mothers, that
carried their babies to their execution, led their children to the gas
chambers, witnessed their burning, poisoned them with cyanamid, or killed them with their own hands. Let their anguish, pain and torture never be forgotten. In our memory they will live forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the Children:

Almighty God, full of Mercy remember the generation of Jewish children
who were reared for slaughter. Remember the multitudes of children, who in their short lives never experienced joy, knowing only hunger,
deprivation and fear. Almighty God, open our hearts to the plight of the deprived and hungry children of today. By helping them, we shall keep the memory of the perished alive. Amen.

Prayer for the Orphans:

Almighty God, full of Compassion, remember the orphans of the Ghetto,
children who torn away from their parents had to wait in hunger and
misery for their turn to be gassed and to be reunited with their parents in the heaps of human ashes. Almighty God, let the cries of the Innocents penetrate the armor of the heartless men, and teach them love, understanding and compassion. Amen.

Prayer for the Fathers

Merciful God that Dwells in Heaven, remember the distressful pain of
the Jewish Fathers who helplessly witnessed the starvation of their
daughters, watched as their sons drowning in blood of the mass graves.
Almighty God, remember their torturous walk through the Valley of Death, a valley saturated with the blood of their children and engulfed in smoke from their burned flesh. Almighty God, never again shall a Father watch helplessly the cruel end of his offspring. Amen.

Prayer for the Six Million Victims:
Almighty God, remember the six million people that were gassed, killed,
drowned, burned alive, tortured, beaten or frozen to death. For the
sake of one man, a whole nation was crucified, while the world looked on in silence. In our hearts, their sacred memory will last forever and
 ever. Amen.

God of our Fathers, let the ashes of the children incinerated in
Auschwitz, the rivers of blood spilled at Babbi Yar or Majdanek, be a warning to mankind that hatred is destructive, violence is contagious, while man has an unlimited capacity for cruelty. For our own sake and for the sake of our children, we have to be our brother's keeper.

Almighty God, fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah: "They shall beat their
swords into ploughshares . . . nation shall not lift up a sword against ,nation, neither shall they learn war any more." Man shall not lift weapon against man, and shall kill no more. Amen.

THE CREED OF A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR

   by Alexander Kimel

I do believe, with all my heart,
In the natural Goodness of Man.
  Despite the blood and destruction,
Brought by one man, trying to be God,
In the Goodness of Man, I do believe.

I do believe, with all my heart,
That God gave man the blessing and the curse.
Man can select the curse of envy, hatred and prejudices,
Or the blessing of love, harmony and beauty.
Despite the painful curses of the past,
In the blessing of the Creator, I do believe.

I do believe, with all my heart,
That God created a beautiful world,
The sun and the trees, the flowers and the bees.
And the best way to serve God, is
To enjoy the fruits of His labor of love.
Despite the painful memories from the past,
In the joyful celebration of life, I do believe.

I believe with all my heart,
     That the Messiah and the Kingdom of Heaven will come;
When man will conquer his destructive urge,
And learn how to live in harmony with nature and himself.
When all the preachers of hate will be silenced,
And man will become his brother's keeper.

When man will stop killing man, in the name of God,
And nation will not lift weapons against nation.
When it will be, I do not know, but
Despite all the signs to the contrary.
In the dawn of a Better World, I do believe

INTERNATIONAL GENOCIDE SCHOLARS ASSOCIATION OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZES

ASSYRIAN, GREEK GENOCIDES

Date: December 15, 2007

Issued by: Adam Jones, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Political Science

Universityof British ColumbiaOkanagan

adam.jones@ubc.ca

========================================

In a groundbreaking move, the International Association of Genocide

Scholars (IAGS) has voted overwhelmingly to recognize the genocides

inflicted on Assyrian and Greek populations of the Ottoman Empire

between 1914 and 1923.

The resolution passed with the support of fully 83 percent of IAGS

members who voted. The resolution (text below) declares that "it is the

conviction of the International Association of Genocide Scholars that

the Ottoman campaign against Christian minorities of the Empire between

1914 and 1923 constituted a genocide against Armenians, Assyrians, and

Pontian and Anatolian Greeks." It "calls upon the government of

to acknowledge the genocides against these populations, to issue a

formal apology, and to take prompt and meaningful steps toward

restitution."

In 1997, the IAGS officially recognized the Armenian genocide. The

current resolution notes that while activist and scholarly efforts have

resulted in widespread acceptance of the Armenian genocide, there has

been "little recognition of the qualitatively similar genocides against

other Christian minorities of the Ottoman Empire." Assyrians, along

with Pontian and Anatolian Greeks, were killed on a scale equivalent in

per capita terms to the catastrophe inflicted on the Armenian

population of the empire -- and by much the same methods, including

mass executions, death marches, and starvation.

IAGS member Adam Jones drafted the resolution, and lobbied for it along

with fellow member Thea Halo, whose mother Sano survived the Pontian

Greek genocide. In an address to the membership at the IAGS conference

in Sarajevo, Bosnia, in July 2007, Jones paid tribute to the efforts of

"representatives of the Greek and Assyrian communities ... to publicize

and call on the present Turkish government to acknowledge the genocides

inflicted on their populations," which had made AsiaMinor their home

for millennia. The umbrella term "Assyrians" includes Chaldeans,

Nestorians, Syriacs, Aramaens, Eastern Orthodox Syrians, and Jacobites.

"The overwhelming backing given to this resolution by the world's

leading genocide scholars organization will help to raise consciousness

about the Assyrian and Greek genocides," Jones said on December 15. "It

will also act as a powerful counter to those, especially in present-day

Turkey, who still ignore or deny outright the genocides of the Ottoman

Christian minorities."

The resolution stated that "the denial of genocide is widely recognized

as the final stage of genocide, enshrining impunity for the

perpetrators of genocide, and demonstrably paving the way for future

genocides." The Assyrian population of Iraq, for example, remains

highly vulnerable to genocidal attack. Since 2003, Iraqi Assyrians have

been exposed to severe persecution and "ethnic cleansing"; it is

believed that up to half the Assyrian population has fled the country.

Extensive supporting documentation for the Assyrian and Greek genocides

was circulated to IAGS members in the months prior to the vote, and is

available at

http://www.genocidetext.net/

iags_resolution_supporting_documentation.htm. IAGS President Gregory

Stantonmay be contacted at .

========================================

FULL TEXT OF THE IAGS RESOLUTION:

WHEREAS the denial of genocide is widely recognized as the final stage

of genocide, enshrining impunity for the perpetrators of genocide, and

demonstrably paving the way for future genocides;

WHEREAS the Ottoman genocide against minority populations during and

following the First World War is usually depicted as a genocide against

Armenians alone, with little recognition of the qualitatively similar

genocides against other Christian minorities of the Ottoman Empire;

BE IT RESOLVED that it is the conviction of the International

Association of Genocide Scholars that the Ottoman campaign against

Christian minorities of the Empire between 1914 and 1923 constituted a

genocide against Armenians, Assyrians, and Pontian and Anatolian

Greeks.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Association calls upon the government

of to acknowledge the genocides against these populations, to

issue a formal apology, and to take prompt and meaningful steps toward

restitution.

“Cruise Out Of Congress “ Protest Rally For Wexler, Turkey Caucus Co-Chair

For Immediate Release: December 10, 2007

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York,  Tel. 1-917-699-9935

WHERE  Sanborn Square, 72 N. Federal Hwy. (US 1), Boca Raton, FL
WHEN     January 12, 2008, Saturday, 3:30 – 5:30 PM

The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) joins Armenian community activists, and other like-minded human rights activists, in Sanborn Square just outside Welxer’s Boca Rotan, Florida home office.

All who believe in justice and American democratic values, are encouraged to join us  and demand that Congressman Robert Wexler-- a denier of the Armenian Genocide, a denier of Turkey’s invasions of Cyprus, and a shameless apologist for Turkey’s crimes against humanity and human rights violations, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and who is also the co-chair of the Turkish Caucus --“Cruise Out of Congress”, now and forever. Scheduled speakers include Democrat candidate Ben Graber, Wexler’s opponent in Florida.

In regards to  Turkish atrocities in Cyprus, condemned by numeorus UN resolutions, and in violation of all human rights conventions, Congressman Wexler has advanced false historical revisionism to absolve Turkey of any responsibilty for its crimes in Cyprus, following one of Wexler’s visits to the illegal pseudo-regime in Turkish-occupied Cyprus, Wexler said

“Unfortunately, most people of the U.S. don’t know anything about Cyprus Those that do will often understand it to be a Turkish attack, and not a response to a historical effort to unify Cyprus with Greece. “  (“The New Anatolian” Turkey’s only independent English- language daily, Monday April, 10th 2006)

In a statement prominently displayed on the website of the well-financed Turkish lobby, “Turkish Coalition of America”, headed up by a Turk who runs Coca-Cola worldwide, Wexler makes public his plans to legitimize Turkey’s ongoing, illegal   military-occupation of Cyprus:

“We need to, in a very dramatic way, increase America’s Turkish Cypriot relations. We should have direct flights, have more economic development, push more recognition of Turkish Cypriot interests in world affairs.”

Recently, Wexler, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has been intensely lobbying against Armenian Genocide recognition in Congress, for video footage of this, please view the following video, which we ask that you please distribute widely to friends, relatives and comrades:  http://www.hairenik.com/HairenikTV/HA_TV_Clip129.htm

Finally, we encourage all survivors and descendents of survivors of ethnic cleansing and Genocide, to fight back, to stand up for justice, and to discontinue any and all misguided support to Wexler, who has a long record of cover-up for Turkish crimes, and instead direct your support to Democratic candidate Benjamin Graber, Wexler’s opponent in Florida District 19, Graber has publicly condemned Wexler’s Genocide Denial, and is a strong supporter of both the Armenian and Greek community.

Help CANA Fight Back Against Growing Anti-Cyprus Sentiment

For Immediate Release: November 21, 2007

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York, Tel. 1-917-699-9935

The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) is greatly concerned with the wave of  Anti-Cyprus sentiment by  the Turkish government’s  international industry of denial, lies and intimidation   In just the part two months,  two major global financial newspapers, on both sides of the Atlantic, the Wall Street Journal in New York, and Financial Times in London, have issued articles and op-eds   promoting false historical revisionism and anti-Cyprus propaganda with an eye toward legitimizing Turkey’s major war crimes of  ongoing military-occupation, ethnic cleansing and cultural genocide in Cyprus.

Resolutions calling for a just end to Turkey’s brutal occupation of Cyprus, introduced into the current US Congress, have met fierce opposition, even at this late date, they have yet to cross the ten-percent plateau of support amongst Congressional representatives.

Numerous press reports have also alerted us to yet further attempts to complete the cultural genocide of Cyprus. The criminal Talat regime in northern Cyprus, this week, further degraded the victims of Turkish Fascism ,  in its fanatical attempts to eradicate  Orthodox Christianity, they now “lease a church in occupied Trimithi village to a ceramic maker for five Turkish lira (£1.50) a year.” (Cyprus Mail, Church anger over desecration in north By Jean Christou, November 21, 2007,

URL: http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=36046&cat_id=1)

Despite the intensity of the campaign, by our opponents, to bury Cyprus with lies, and absolve Turkey, one of most repressive human-rights-abusing regimes in the world, and an unrepentant perpetrator of Greek, Assyrian and Armenian Genocide from its responsibilities for its crimes—we charge on, for the light of victory is almost in sight. We are confident that the beginnings of grassroots activism that have been ignited in recent months will ultimately prevail. The one advantage we have, is truth. With all of Turkey’s military bullying and displays of self-confidence, we become more and more aware of their panic, and we know that this death rattle of fascism from Ankara and its supporters will be overwhelmed by our simple message of truth, freedom and justice for all.

The letter writing campaign to MSNBC on its anti-Cyprus article has been supported by responses spanning the globe. See some of the responses, by visiting our new page, Responses to MSNBC: ( http://www.cyprusactionnetwork.org/responses_to_msnbc )

We would also like to thank all the activists and supporters, who responded, Hellenic Organization of University Graduates of America HOUGA and Hellenic Anti-Bias project, special thanks to those who crafted the original action alert, although modified by HOUGA, we recently discovered that  it was originated by PSEKA, sorry for not giving you guys proper credit before, and thanks!

In coming days, and months CANA will be mounting a larger campaign to draw public attention to the issue of stolen properties, through letter writings, call ins, Congressional visits and contacts. And, of course, demonstrations. Please join us; the time has come to fight back against the attacks on Cyprus. That time is now.

In the mean time, please stay in touch.

Letters to the Editor

The Washington Times

3600 New York Avenue, NE

Washington, DC 20002

To the Editor:

While Helle Dale honestly presents the Armenian Genocide of 1915 ("Armenian folly," Op-Ed, yesterday), she fails in noting the long-term dangers of Turkey's genocide denial by claiming that the timing is wrong.

Denial of the Armenian genocide and the Holocaust is on the rise in America, the Middle East and Europe. The Turkish government's international industry of denial, financed to the tune of millions of dollars worldwide and extending into American universities and Congress' corridors, is countered by the existence of the dwindling survivors who remain to give living testament to the crime.

Rep. Gary L. Ackerman, New York Democrat, whose district covers familiar territory in Queens, such as Flushing, pretty much told it like it is last week. He said he felt so sorry for the survivors in wheelchairs, who traveled through airports, from different parts of the country. Gesturing to them, he said, "What time can they come back?"

Meanwhile, Turkey can go on forever denying the slaughter of Kurds, denying its occupation of Cyprus, denying its genesis in genocide.

Armenian folly

October 17, 2007

Helle Dale - A long-smoldering dispute between Turks and Armenians over events nearly a century old has finally erupted into full flame in the charged atmosphere of Washington politics in the shape of the Armenian Genocide resolution. The nonbinding resolution passed the House Committee on Foreign Affairs last week by a vote of 27-21, following several unsuccessful attempts going back to 2000. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has pledged to make sure the resolution reaches the floor of the House. If it passes, it will send shock waves throughout American policy in the Middle East.

Maybe the problem is that the dead never really leave us. The Armenian genocide by the Ottoman Turks took place almost a century ago, but the ghosts of the estimated 1.5 million Armenians who lost their lives in one of the most brutal ethnic-cleansing campaigns in history will now haunt American efforts to create a stable and viable Iraq.

It is deeply regrettable, but rather than help right a great historic wrong, the Armenian genocide resolution will now stand as an egregious example of special-interest politics distorting a larger national-security issue.

During World War I, most of Turkey's Armenian population was driven out of Anatolia and into the desert of Syria. There, most of them perished from heat and thirst as they struggled to reach the area of present-day Armenia.

What is wrong, one might ask, with officially acknowledging the suffering and the destruction of these people? In one sense, nothing. The history of the 20th century will not be complete until Turkey recognizes, as Japan and Germany have, the horrors of past regimes.

Indeed, had Turkey many years ago accepted responsibility for the sins of the past, we would not be where we are today.

The historical evidence of the genocide is solid and documented by contemporary eyewitness accounts of foreign diplomats — which in fact at the time caused considerable international uproar. However, Turks even today tend react violently to any discussion of the Armenian genocide, disputing everything from the methods to the numbers. Turks have not been good advocates for their own cause and have created sympathy in Europe and in the United States for the small, impoverished Armenian nation next door to the east.

Nor did Turkey do itself much good in the opinion of many Americans, when its parliament denied the United States the use of its airbases for the invasion of Iraq. In Congress in particular, the argument that Turkey is too valuable an ally to offend was severely undercut.

But the problem is that the Armenian genocide is the past -— and this is the present. As Rep. Tom Lantos correctly stated,"We have to weigh the desire to express our solidarity with the Armenian people... against the risk that it could cause young men and women in the uniform of the United States armed services to pay an even heavier price."

In the present, the Armenian genocide resolution will affect U.S. relations with Turkey, which, with all our ups and downs, remains a vital strategic ally for the effort it Iraq.

It is through the Incirlik airbase in southeastern Turkey and through supply routes via Turkey into northern Iraq that a majority of American supplies and reinforcements flow.

At this point in time, stabilizing Iraq has to be the priority. In addition to denying the United States the use of these bases, Turkey is considering a military incursion into northern Iraq to attack Kurdish extremist strongholds, a move the U.S. government strongly opposes.

American Armenians have pressed for the recognition of past wrongs for a long time. They are understandably elated, but must pause to consider the potential harm this will cause to the country that is now their home and which has enabled them to become one of its most prosperous ethnic communities.

Meanwhile congressional liberals are shamefully taking advantage of a historic tragedy to achieve what they could not do otherwise, i.e. severely hamstring the Bush administration's efforts in Iraq — using Turkey as the tool. California is home to the largest Armenian community in the United States. The California congressional delegation, including Mrs. Pelosi, has spearheaded the effort to pass the genocide resolution.

Their strategy is clever, as well as totally unconscionable on so many levels. Liberals of conscience, such as Mr. Lantos, ought to distance themselves from this blow to the national interest. It serves neither Armenians nor Americans.

SMYRNA MASSACRE: Memorial for the Victims

For Immediate Release: August 23, 2007

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York,  Tel. 1-917-699-9935

WHERE Turkish Embassy 2525 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC
WHEN   September 09, Sunday, 1PM-4PM

The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) joins the STOP coalition,to memorialize the dead, the refugees and all the Orthodox Christian victims of Turkey’s Smyrna Massacre. The STOP Coalition stands for “Stop Terrorizing Orthodox Peoples!”

Our group is open to any and all who believe the time has come to draw public attention to the evil of the continuing genocides against the many millions of Orthodox Christians around the world.

On September 9th 1922, as part of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides of 1915-1923, Turkish armies of Mustafa Kemal (founder of the
Republic of Turkey) entered the pre-dominantly Christian populated and Greek Orthodox Christian city of Smyrna and began a wholesale massacre of
men, women, the old and weak, and children. Starting with the Armenian quarter, the Turkish army set fires to homes and churches filled with
people, and turned this legendary Christian city to ash. Who they  couldn’t kill in time, they pushed into the sea. Orthodox Christian refugees, Greek and Armenian, crowded the quay, in desperate flight from Turkey’s genocidal armies.

Despite the many Western press agents, numerous diplomatic reports, and  the watchful eyes of a flotilla of some 27 Allied warships that are
witnesses to the Smyrna Massacre—Turkey refuses to accept any responsibility for its crimes. To this day, Turkey not only denies its crimes,
Turkey continues to degrade the victims , continues its aggression and  contempt for human rights, Turkey remains one of the most anti-Orthodox
Christian, repressive, human rights abusing regimes in the world.

Join us, in witnessing readings of survivor testimonies, in lighting of  candles for the dead, and in our demand that Turkey make a public  apology.
