NEW YORK—The largest circulation Greek-American Daily newspaper National Herald ΕΘΝΙΚΟΣ ΚΗΡΥΞ, published a report on the  recent Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) picket against Congressman Wexler and the Turkish Lobby , the report by Stavros Marmarinos titled “Ο φιλότουρκος βουλευτής Ρόμπερτ Γουέξλερ άκουσε ομογενείς διαδηλωτές” (Trans: “The Philo-Turk Congressman Robert Wexler listened to Hellenic community demonstrators”) was printed on page five of the National Herald ΕΘΝΙΚΟΣ ΚΗΡΥΞ, Wednesday, July 16, 2008 edition.

The Philo-Turk Congressman Robert Wexler listened to Hellenic community demonstrators

NEW YORK—The presence of Hellenic community demonstrators picketing the Turkish lobby on Monday afternoon, caused Florida democrat Congressman Robert Wexler,the co-chair of the Turkish Congressional Caucus to stop and take notice both when arriving at the building where the Turkish lobby event took place , where he was attending, and when leaving the Turkish lobby event.

A small group of demonstrators from the Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA), that travelled to Washington DC from New York, stood outside of the Dacor Bacon House in the American capital, where Mr. Wexler presented and discussed and signed his book for whoever bothered to purchase his book. The event was organized by the Anti-Cyprus Turkish lobby.

The head of  CANA was holding in his hands the Byzantine flag, and a placard that  wrote “End Turkish Fascism in Cyprus” and the other demonstrators held placards with slogans writing in English “Turkey is Mass Murder of Cypriots” “Turkey Guilty of  Murder in Cyprus”

“For all those hours that we stood outside the building, the Turks watched us and were very upset by our presence” said Mr. Taneris. “Several times they made obscene gestures at us, because they were bothered that we went there”

“When Mr. Wexler was arriving, surrounded by representatives of the Turkish lobby and had to pass by us to enter the building, he approached the group of Hellenic community demonstrators, some of whom were holding the flags of Greece and Cyprus.”

“Mr. Wexler told us he understood that we felt pain for Cyprus and he respected that” said Taneris. “We replied and told him that we have with us victims of Turkey’s brutality in Cyprus. We showed him Georgia Maratheftis, whose heritage is from Occupied-Amohosto, she held a placard that wrote that Turkey is Murderer of Cypriots. Her grandmother was killed in the second invasion of Cyprus by Turkey. We also told him that Greek-Cypriots live in his voting district” Mr. Wexler listened to us carefully and told us that he respected that we came. After a few hours he departed from the building and was surrounded by Turkish lobby representatives, he separated from them, and waved goodbye to us. We started shouting chants that the Turkish lobby financiers a Big Lie, it’s a denier of Turkey’s criminal invasion and Turkish crimes in Cyprus and is only a propaganda organ”

“The Turks called the police, who came only to tell us we have every right to be there” said Taneris.

The organizer of the demonstrators answered to the questions of why they were so few in number. He said that the demonstration was done with only a few days notice and that what was meaningful was that so many took off from work to travel from New York to Washington to demonstrate.

Mr. Taneris has the title “General Secretary” of the CANA organization, his heritage is from Mani in Peloponnesus. One of his grandfathers has heritage from Constantinople, and he is a member of the Lakonian and the Pan Thracian Union of America.

He also told us that he is a writer, and works with Real Estate.

The big demonstration being organized by CANA will take place this Sunday 2-5PM outside of the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC.

Buses will be departing at 8AM the morning of the same day, outside of the STATHAKION CENTER of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, in the Ditmars area of Astoria.

Ο φιλότουρκος βουλευτής Ρόμπερτ Γουέξλερ άκουσε ομογενείς διαδηλωτές

ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ. Η παρουσία ομογε-

νών διαδηλωτών έξω από το κτίριο

στο οποίο μίλησε το απόγευμα της

Δευτέρας υπέρ της Τουρκίας στην

Ουάσιγκτον, ανάγκασε τον δημο-

κρατικό βουλευτή Φλόριδας, Ρό-

μπερτ Γουέξλερ, ιδρυτή και συ-

μπρόεδρο του Αμερικανοτουρκικού

Συνδέσμου Φιλίας, να σταματήσει

να τους ακούσει και να τους μιλή-

σει, την ώρα που κατέφθανε και

όταν αναχωρούσε από εκεί.

Μικρή ομάδα διαδηλωτών του

Cyprus Action Network of America

(CANA), που είχαν ταξιδέψει από

τη Νέα Υόρκη, στέκονταν έξω από

το Dacon Bacon House της αμερι-

κανικής πρωτεύουσας, όπου ο κ.

Γουέξλερ επρόκειτο να μιλήσει και

να παρουσιάσει το βιβλίο του, υπο-

γράφοντας σε όσους το αγοράσουν.

Η εκδήλωση αυτή είχε οργανωθεί

από το τουρκικό λόμπι εναντίον της

Κύπρου.

Ο επικεφαλής του CANA, Νικό-

λαος Τανέρης, κρατούσε στα χέρια

του μια σημαία του Βυζαντίου και

μια πινακίδα που έγραφε, «Τέλος

στον τουρκικό φασισμό στην Κύ-

προ», ενώ οι άλλοι διαδηλωτές εί-

χαν πλακάτ με τα συνθήματα στην

αγγλική, «Οι Τούρκοι είναι οι μεγά-

λοι δολοφόνοι στην Κύπρο», «Οι

Τούρκοι είναι ένοχοι δολοφονιών

στην Κύπρο».

»Ολες αυτές τις ώρες που μέναμε

έξω από το κτίριο, οι Τούρκοι μας

έβλεπαν και ήταν πολύ ενοχλημέ-

νοι από την παρουσία μας», είπε ο

κ. Τανέρης. «Μερικές φορές μας

έκαναν άσχημες χειρονομίες, γιατί

τους πείραξε που είχαμε πάει εκεί».

Οταν κατέφθασε για την ομιλία

του ο κ. Γουέξλερ, συνοδευόμενος

από παράγοντες του τουρκικού λό-

μπι και έπρεπε να περάσει από δί-

πλα τους για να κατευθυνθεί στην

είσοδο του κτιρίου, πλησίασε την

ομάδα των ομογενών διαδηλωτών,

μερικοί από τους οποίους κρατού-

σαν και τις σημαίες της Ελλάδος και

της Κύπρου.

»Ο κ. Γουέξλερ μας είπε ότι κα-

ταλαβαίνει πως έχουμε πόνο για

την Κύπρο και το εκτιμά», δήλωσε ο

κ. Τανέρης. «Του απάντησε ότι εί-

χαμε μαζί μας και θύματα από τις

τουρκικές αγριότητες στην Κύπρο.

Του δείξαμε την Γεωργία Μαραθέ-

φτη, που κατάγεται από την κατε-

χόμενη Αμμόχωστο και κρατούσε

ένα πλακάτ που έγραφε ότι οι Τούρ-

κοι είναι δολοφόνοι στην Κύπρο. Η

γιαγιά της σκοτώθηκε κατά τη δεύ-

τερη εισβολή των Τούρκων στην

Κύπρο. Είπα ακόμα στον κ. Γουέξ-

λερ ότι στην εκλογική του περιφέ-

ρεια στη Φλόριδα, ζουν πολλοί Ελ-

ληνοκύπριοι». Ο κ. Γουέξλερ μας

άκουσε με προσοχή και μας είπε ότι

εκτιμά που βρισκόμασταν εκεί.

Οταν μετά από λίγες ώρες βγήκε

από το κτίριο όπου έκανε την ομι-

λία του, και πάλι με παράγοντες του

τουρκικού λόμπι, απομακρύνθηκε

από αυτούς και μας χαιρέτισε. Εμείς

φωνάζαμε συνθήματα, ότι το τουρ-

κικό λόμπι χρηματοδοτεί μεγάλο

ψέμα, αποσιωπά την εισβολή και τα

τουρκικά εγκλήματα στην Κύπρο

και είναι μόνο ένα όργανο προπα-

γάνδας».

«Oι Τούρκοι κάλεσαν την Αστυ-

νομία η οποία όμως μας είπε ότι εί-

χαμε κάθε δικαίωμα που βρισκόμα-

σταν εκεί», είπε ο κ. Τανέρης.

Ερωτηθείς ο υπεύθυνος της ορ-

γάνωσης γιατί ήταν τόσο λίγοι οι

διαδηλωτές, απάντησε ότι η διαδή-

λωση οργανώθηκε επειγόντως τις

τελευταίες ημέρες και ότι έχει ση-

μασία πως αυτοί που συμμετείχαν

άφησαν τις εργασίες τους εκείνη

την ημέρα και ταξίδεψαν από τη

Νέα Υόρκη στην Ουάσιγκτον για να

διαμαρτυρηθούν.

Ο κ. Τανέρης, που έχει τον τίτλο

του γενικού γραμματέα της οργά-

νωσης CANA κατάγεται από τη Μά-

νη της Πελοποννήσου. Ο ένας από

τους παππούδες του κατάγεται από

την Κωνσταντινούπολη και είναι

μέλος των Λακώνων και της Παν-

θρακικής Ενωσης Αμερικής.

Οπως ο ίδιος δήλωσε, είναι συγ-

γραφέας και ασχολείται με τα κτη-

ματομεσιτικά.

Η μεγάλη διαμαρτυρία εναντίον

που οργανώνεται από την CANA,

θα πραγματοποιηθεί αυτή την Κυ-

ριακή από τις 2-5 μ.μ. έξω από την

τουρκική πρεσβεία στην Ουάσι-

γκτον.

Για τη μεταφορά διαδηλωτών θα

αναχωρήσει στις 8 το πρωί της ίδιας

ημέρας ναυλωμένο λεωφορείο, έξω

από το Σταθάκειο Κέντρο της Ομο-

σπονδίας Ελληνικών Σωματείων

Νέας Υόρκης στο Ντίτμαρς της

Αστόριας.
